An exciting new report has just been released from the Wilderness Committee that details what communities in Northern British Columbia need to successfully implement provincial climate action and reconciliation goals.

Northern Vision and Voices: What the region needs to thrive in a changing world is authored by UNBC Masters student Megan Gordon, and shows that “Northerners have diverse and unique needs and local leaders are the ones who know what’s best for their communities.”

The report makes several recommendations for public servants and policymakers to address the uneven power dynamics within the North and the colonial approach of the provincial government towards the region.

The report offers a number of options for public servants and policymakers to change existing power dynamics, and as project lead Peter McCartney stated, “leaving people behind is not an option… we can have Indigenous sovereignty, a safe climate and thriving communities — we have no other choice.”
