UNEP Two Minute Videos on Oceans: Adaptation to Sea Level Rise

UNEP educates the public about the world’s oceans with its video series:

Two Minutes on Oceans with Jim Toomey!

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has partnered with cartoonist Jim Toomey – of Sherman’s Lagoon fame – in developing a series of six two-minute videos intended to raise awareness of the importance of oceans and the coastal environment. The videos use animation and humor to explain in clear and simple language the role oceans play in our lives and our very survival.

The series includes a video on Adaptation to Sea Level Rise. The video shows that sea levels are rising at an increasing rate, threatening coastal communities with floods and storm surges. At the same time, ecosystem health is being weakened, leaving shorelines less able to protect communities from impacts. This video illustrates how coastal communities can restore natural resilience and adapt to sea level rise.

We have written an App for Apple and Android devices that can help people learn about the terrain of the oceans and the worlds coastlines. You can artificially raise and lower the sea levels and see how much water would be used to do so. The terrain is exaggerated to show the earths features more clearly. Please take a look at Elevation Earth!

Thanks Andrew! Tools that help us visualize the challenges are so helpful as we try and help people understand what they may have to adapt to. Keep up the great work!
